Tim Obrien - "Cornbread Nation"
Tim Obrien - "Cornbread Nation"By Jim Moulton - AngryCountry Contributing Writer
Tim Obrien has created a real fine Americana sounding disc with an eclectic approach. Some public domain, a Harlan Howard, Jimmie Rodgers and some of his own material.Lots of different sounds, a lot that fall into alt/country and Americana. Though he considers himself a folk artist.
The disc starts out with a gospel based bouncy song with some great electric guitar by Kenny Vaughn. Really in the groove. Mollie Obrien on backup vocals. Wish the song "Hold On" had lyrics with it, but no big deal, you can hear everything well. "Keep your hand on that plough and hold on". Brings back memories of "Oh Brother, Where art thou?"
A real high point is "House Of The Risin' Sun" with Dan Tyminski on vocals, Jerry Douglas on Dobro, and some nice banjo by Charlie Cushman. Lots of verses, I never heard before. Nice guitar break by Obrien. "Busted" by Harlan Howard has a traditional country sound with Stuart Duncan on fiddle and Dan Dugmore on steel. Tim plays some great acoustic rhythm guitar on this CD. Dugmore is incredible. Vaughn is great on lead electric guitar.
"California Blues" (Jimmie Rodgers) just Obrien on acoustic, Vaughn on electric guitar(real sweet tones) Crouch on bass.
"Runnin' Out of Memory" (Obrien) -Del McCoury sings some funny lyrics about a computer crashin. Cushman plays some banjo and more great fiddle by Duncan.
"The Foggy, Foggy Dew" a swing sounding song with Vaughn playing some incredible old time Jazzy guitar. Vaughn really plays a lot of different styles well on this disc.
"Boat Up the River" -an interesting take on an old time , pretty swing tune.
"When This World Comes To An End" - very nice gospel song with some great backup vocals by Odessa Settles, Todd Settles and Darrell Scott. Kenny Vaughn plays some raunchy guitar to counterpoint the melody.
Produced by Tim Obrien, it is a good recording with some creativity and lots of different styles. Gary Paczosa runs the boards and was the head engineer. This is full of emotion, high lonesome harmonies and just great music.
